Recently at Spectrum Therapy Australia we had Book Week. It was so great to see so many people dressed up as a character from their favourite book! In recognising the brilliance of books during book week, it is great to continue reading books with children to support their literacy and language development.
Use the ideas below with any books you may have at home!
- Making predictions: Before reading the book, you can discuss the title of the book. Ask them questions about what they think the story will be about based off the title or picture on the book.
- Pause and wait: While reading the story, pause to give your child opportunities to make comments or ask questions about what they see or hear from the book.
- Re-read stories: By re-reading stories you have read before with your child, this provides them with the opportunity to ask more questions.
- Vocabulary: Provide your child with child-friendly definitions of any words that they may be unfamiliar with
- Rhyme: While reading the book, ask your child to name some words that may rhyme with a given word.
