What are fine motor skills?
Fine motor skills involve the use of small muscles of our hands and fingers. We use these muscles commonly when using pencils to write and colour, scissors, or construction with Legos. Children with fine motor skills difficulties may struggle not only with writing tasks but also with self-care tasks such as buttons, shoelaces, and zippers which impact their participation to engage in everyday activities.
Here are some fine motor activities to try with your child at home!
- Colouring- a great way to develop and strengthen these small muscles as well as correcting pencil grip.
- Writing about their favourite topic
- Playdough and threading are also great activities for strengthening the muscles of the fingers.
- Drawing their favourite figure
- Make the activity encouraging by giving them rewards such as stickers or 5 minutes play time.
- Break down the activity into smaller steps to make it easy and successful to complete.
- Consistent practice is the key to improve fine motor skills, E.g., practice writing activities for 5-10 minutes every day.
