What is KWS?
KWS is aform of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) which borrows signs from the signing system of the nation where it is used (AUSLAN in Australia). The signs are only for key words of a message as it is not a language.
Why do people use it?
People use KWS as it helps children and adults who struggle to use speech to communicate and provides a way to communicate across a range of topics and settings, without the frustration. It also builds on speech skills by introducing new words (vocabulary) and using them in a meaningful way (language).
How do people use it?
People are taught individual signs of key words that they would use in daily communication. Young children may use word signs in a range of daily routines such as playtime, dinner time and getting ready for preschool. A child and parent/carer can sign key words in a message to be understood (expressive language) and to understand the other (receptive language).
