If we communicate verbally, we use our voices every day and we know how important it is to have a voice that is easy to use and sounds clear. That is why it can be so hard when we are not able to talk easily or clearly due to vocal nodules.
Vocal nodules are small growths on the vocal folds, the pieces of tissue in the larynx that vibrate when we speak. These growths are common in children and children with voice nodules can benefit greatly from speech therapy.
What causes them?
Vocal nodules can be caused by misuse of the voice, such as shouting, excessive talking or talking, allergies or straining the voice. As these activities are common in young children, they can be at a higher risk of vocal nodules. However, people with professions that involve a lot of talking can also develop vocal nodules, such as teachers or singers.
What are the signs?
Vocal folds can affect what the voice sounds like. If you consistently hear that your child’s voice sounds harsh, rough, breathy or scratchy this can be a sign of vocal nodules. Their voice may also get tired quite quickly and these sounds might be worse at the end of the day or after school.
How are they diagnosed?
If you are concerned about your child’s voice, you can speak to your GP about a referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor who can use a camera to look at your child’s vocal fold to see if there are nodules present.
How are they treated?
Speech Pathology! A primary way that nodules are treated is through speech pathology intervention in which your child is taught good voice habits and how to use their voice in a way that doesn’t hurt it. Surgery can also be used as part of the treatment plan.
