Speech Pathologists love providing families with strategies to develop language at home. As you you spend the most time with your child at home, there are so many day-to-day opportunities.
Every family has daily and weekly routines, and these are the perfect place to model rich language to support your child’s language skills. Some examples of this include can be done within the kitchen!
Get your child involved in meal preparation and cooking! We do this every day and often multiple times a day, so this is a great way to embed language in a fun and interactive way. Here are some examples:
- Have your child find ingredients needed and ask then WH questions (e.g. “what do we need to make an omelette? “where are the eggs?”; “what do we need to do next?”)
- Involve your child in finding the ingredients. This is a great opportunity to build their vocabulary of daily food items.
- Teach your child verbs such as pour, chop, mix to increase their understanding of these concepts and expressive language
- Practice following instructions while in the kitchen, e.g. “first we need the pan then we need the eggs”
- Model prepositions to build their understanding of location concepts (e.g. “put the carrot on the chopping board”; “put the spoon in the bowl”)
