Speech Pathologists are widely known for working with individuals in the assessment and treatment of speech and language impairments. Stuttering is a commonly occurring speech disorder found in children and adults which is also managed by Speech Pathologists.
Stuttering is known as the interruptions that occur in the flow or rhythm of speech.
These interruptions may look like:
- Part-word repetitions – “I w-w-w-want a drink.”
- One-syllable word repetitions – “Go-go-go away.”
- Prolonged sounds – “Ssssssssam is nice.”
- Blocks or stops – “I want a (pause) cookie.”
There are sometimes accompanying behaviours that may occur when someone stutters. These may include verbal behaviours (grunts, small non-speech sounds, filler words and/or pauses) and non-verbal behaviours (grimacing, blinking or body movements).
Some strategies used in the treatment of stuttering include:
- Slowing down the rate of speech
- Parents allowing their child to retrieve the sentence rather than speaking for them
- Parents modelling the correct production with prolonged speech at home
